Expressions with the verb "dar" (which has the meaning of "to give" in English)

Hello! I'm back with another blogpost. This time we'll tackle some useful expressions containing the verb "dar". You can call these expressions as "locutions", which means a stable group of two or more words that functions as a single unit with its own meaning, that's not taken from the words it's composed of.

For example: dar con alguien en la calle
Its meaning is "to run into somebody in the street".

As you can see the the English locution has the verb "run", while the Spanish one has the verb "dar". And "run" is not the same as "dar". These are two different verbs!
So, there are several other locutions with the verb "dar". And we'll at least try to learn them one by one... Ok?
I'm going to introduce them one by one in no particular order. So, get ready!!!

1. dar un abrazo a alguien => to hug somebody
     Ex. ¿Le diste abrazo a tu amigo antes que te fuiste?   Did you hug your friend before you left?

2. dar importancia a algo => to consider something important
     Ex. Damos importancia a nuestra salud.     We consider our health important.

3. dar clases => to teach
    Ex. Yo doy clases de español puesto que soy profesor de idiomas.  I teach Spanish since I'm a language teacher.

4. dar un paseo => to take a walk
     Ex. Los domingos doy un paseo en el parque.  I take a walk in the park on Sundays.

5. dar las tres/cuatro/cinco/etc => to strike three/four/five/etc o'clock
     Ex.  El reloj ha dado las cuatro.   The clock has struck 4 o'clock.

6. dar al jardin/mar/calle/etc =>  to face the garden
     Ex.  Me encanta estar en el balcón porque da al bonito jardín.  I love sitting in the balcony because it faces the pretty garden.

7. dar con la solución => to find the solution
     Ex. Todavía no dieron con la solución a su problema.  They still didn't find the solution to their problem.

8. dar contra algo => to hit something
     Ex. Su pata dio con la mesita así que le duele ahora.  His leg hit the table so it's hurting now.

9. dar por concluido algo => to treat something as concluded
     Ex. Dieron por concluido la reunión.   They treated the meeting as concluded.

10. darse por inteligente/trabajador/etc => to believe oneself to be intelligent/hardworking/etc
     Ex. El nuevo alumno se da por inteligente aunque hay otros mejores que él.  The new pupil believes he's intelligent even though there are others better than him.

11. darse un baño => to take a bath
     Ex. Después de desayunar me cepillo y me doy un baño.  After eating breakfast I brush and take a bath.

12.  darse cuenta de algo => to realize something
     Ex.  Acabo de darme cuenta de que fue aquel chico quien te robó el celular.   I've just realized that it was that boy who snatched your cellphone.

13. darse prisa => to hurry up
     Ex. ¡Date prisa que llegamos con retraso!  Hurry up or we'll arrive late!

14. darse un susto => to get scared
     Ex. ¿Te diste un susto cuando viste el fantasma?  Did you get scared when you saw the ghost?
